Charleston is a driving town. The airport sits in North Charleston, the beaches are spread out on islands to the east and south, and a normal visit can mean downtown one day, Folly the next, and a run up to Mount Pleasant for dinner. That adds up to real miles, which is why a hybrid is one of the more sensible rentals here. We keep two in the QUSE fleet: a 2022 Toyota Corolla Hybrid and a 2019 Ford Fusion Hybrid. They are both efficient, but they are not interchangeable. This guide compares them honestly and shows what the fuel savings look like on actual Lowcountry trips.
The two hybrids at a glance
| 2022 Toyota Corolla Hybrid | 2019 Ford Fusion Hybrid | |
|---|---|---|
| Daily rate on Turo | $55/day | $65/day |
| EPA combined fuel economy | 52 MPG | 42 MPG |
| Size | Compact sedan, 5 seats | Midsize sedan, 5 seats |
| Turo record | 32 trips, 5.0 stars | 30 trips, 5.0 stars |
| Best for | Solo travelers and couples, long stays, lowest total cost | Business trips, four adults, more back-seat and cabin room |
Both are white, both are detailed between every trip, and both book the same way through Turo with local pickup in Mount Pleasant, delivery within 10 miles, or delivery to Charleston International Airport.
What the fuel savings look like
MPG numbers are easy to nod at and hard to feel, so here is the math on distances our guests actually drive. Approximate one-way distances from CHS: downtown Charleston about 12 miles, Mount Pleasant about 15, Folly Beach about 20, Kiawah Island about 35. A week with an airport round trip, a few beach days and daily errands easily reaches 300 miles.
Using an illustrative gas price of $3.00 a gallon (check the pump the week you travel), a 300-mile week costs roughly:
| Car | Combined MPG | Gallons for 300 miles | Fuel cost at $3.00/gal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toyota Corolla Hybrid | 52 | about 5.8 | about $17 |
| Ford Fusion Hybrid | 42 | about 7.1 | about $21 |
| Typical non-hybrid SUV at 26 MPG (like our Ford Escape) | 26 | about 11.5 | about $35 |
On a normal week, a hybrid saves you roughly $14 to $18 in gas compared with a small SUV. That is not life-changing on its own. It becomes meaningful on longer trips: a day trip to Savannah or Myrtle Beach and back is roughly 200 to 220 miles, and a two-week stay can double the mileage. It also means fewer stops at the pump, which on a short trip is time you would rather spend at the beach.
Want the 52 MPG option?
The Corolla Hybrid is $55/day on Turo, our lowest rate, with delivery in Mount Pleasant and to CHS.

The Corolla is the right call when cost is the priority. It is our lowest daily rate and our best fuel economy, so it wins on total trip cost almost every time. It is also easy to live with downtown: compact enough for tight street parking on the peninsula and for the narrow lots near the beaches. For one or two people with a couple of suitcases, there is no reason to spend more.
Where it gives ground is space. Four adults with luggage will feel the compact back seat and trunk on a longer drive.
When to pick the Fusion Hybrid
The Fusion is a midsize sedan, and it drives like one: quieter at highway speed, a roomier back seat, and a cabin that feels a step up from a compact. That is why it is popular with guests flying into CHS for work, and with small groups who want sedan comfort without SUV fuel bills. It costs $10 a day more than the Corolla and uses a little more fuel, but it still gets roughly 60 percent better mileage than a typical small SUV.
Do you need a hybrid at all?
Not always. If you are bringing a family of five, a pile of beach chairs, or you just want to sit higher, our SUVs start at the same $55/day as the Corolla. The 2022 Chevrolet Equinox is the usual pick for that. A hybrid is the better choice when you are driving a lot, traveling light, or simply want the lowest total for the trip.
How to book either one
Both hybrids are listed on our Turo profile. Open the listing, enter your dates and pickup choice, and the checkout screen shows the full total with Turo's trip fee, your protection plan and any delivery fee. Airport delivery is $100 and free on trips of 5 days or more. After you book, we send the handoff details through the Turo app. If you are comparing against a rental counter, our guide to comparing Turo and counter totals walks through the math.
