Is Turo Cheaper Than Enterprise in Charleston? How to Compare the Real Total

Daily rates lie in both directions. Here is where the money actually moves between a Turo booking and a Charleston rental counter, and a two-minute way to compare them honestly.

We run a Turo fleet in Mount Pleasant, so you would expect us to say Turo is cheaper. The honest answer is: usually, but not always, and the daily rate is the wrong number to compare. Enterprise, Hertz, Avis and the other counters at Charleston International price by demand, and so do Turo hosts. What differs is what gets stacked on top of the rate, what you can and cannot control, and what you actually get for the money. This post lays that out so you can compare for your own dates instead of trusting anybody's blanket claim, including ours.

Why we won't quote Enterprise's price

Counter rates in Charleston swing hard between a Tuesday in January and a Saturday in wedding season, and they change day to day. Any number we printed here would be wrong by the time you read it. What does not change is the structure of the bill, so that is what we compare.

What the counter adds to its daily rate

At an airport rental counter, the advertised rate is the starting point. Renting at the airport itself generally adds airport-specific surcharges to the bill that an off-airport location would not carry. On top of that, the counter sells add-ons at pickup: its own damage waiver, supplemental liability, roadside coverage, a prepaid fuel option, tolling devices with a daily service charge, and a young-driver fee if you are under 25. Some of these are optional, some are hard to decline in the moment, and all of them appear after the number that got you to book.

Two more costs are easy to miss. A counter rents you a class of car ("intermediate SUV or similar"), so the car you get is a lottery. And most counters tie up a deposit on your card for the length of the trip, which matters if you are on a debit card.

What Turo adds to its daily rate

Turo is a marketplace, so the listing price is what the host set for that specific car. Turo then adds three things, all visible on the checkout screen before you pay:

  • A trip fee. Turo's own charge for running the platform.
  • A protection plan. You pick the level. Cheaper plans mean more responsibility if something happens; pricier plans mean less. This is the Turo equivalent of the counter's damage waiver, but you choose it in the app, not under pressure at a desk.
  • Delivery, if you want it. Set by the host. Ours is $100 to Charleston International, free on trips of 5 days or more, and included within 10 miles of Mount Pleasant.

What Turo does not add: airport concession surcharges (there is no Turo counter at CHS), a mandatory deposit on every trip, or a prepaid fuel upsell. You bring the car back at the fuel level you received it, and that is that.

Compare against real numbers

Our 12 cars run $55 to $80 a day on Turo, and every listing shows the full total before you pay. Delivery to CHS is free on 5+ day trips.

When Turo usually wins

  • Trips of 5 days or more. Our delivery fee drops to zero, and Turo's trip fee spreads across more days. A week in an Equinox at $55/day is $385 in daily rate before the app's fees, with airport delivery included.
  • Anything nicer than a mid-size. Counter pricing climbs steeply above the standard classes. A Porsche Macan at $70/day or a Mercedes GLC at $65/day has no real counter equivalent at that price in Charleston.
  • Late-night arrivals. A counter that is closed costs you a hotel night or a ride. A 24-hour host does not.
  • Debit-card renters. No counter-style deposit and no paperwork at pickup.

When the counter can win

  • Very short trips in the off-season. A one-day rental in January can price low at the counter, and a $100 delivery fee on a one-day Turo trip is hard to justify. Book local pickup instead, or compare totals.
  • One-way rentals. Turo trips start and end with the same host. If you are driving to Atlanta and flying home from there, the counter is the right tool.
  • Corporate codes and loyalty status. If your employer's rate applies, run the numbers; it can beat everything.

The two-minute comparison

  • Open the counter's site, enter your CHS dates, and go all the way to the final screen with taxes and fees. Write that total down.
  • Open the Turo listing you like, enter the same dates with Charleston International as the location, and pick the protection plan you would actually buy. Write that total down.
  • Add the cost of the counter's damage waiver if you would take it, and subtract the value of getting the exact car you chose. Now compare.

That is the whole method. It takes about as long as reading this post, and it works for any host and any counter, not just us. We have 600 trips and a 5.0 rating on Turo because guests who do this math tend to come back.

Frequently asked

Is Turo always cheaper than Enterprise in Charleston?

No. Counter rates move with demand and so do Turo listings. Turo tends to win on total cost when the counter's airport surcharges and add-ons stack up, and on longer trips where a host waives delivery. Compare the final checkout totals for your exact dates.

What does Turo add on top of the daily rate?

A Turo trip fee, the protection plan you choose, and any delivery fee the host charges. All three are shown on the checkout screen before you pay. QUSE Cars charges $100 for CHS airport delivery and waives it on trips of 5 days or more.

Do I get the exact car I book on Turo?

Yes. A Turo listing is one specific vehicle, not a class. The 2022 Chevrolet Equinox in the photos is the Equinox you drive.

Can I return a Turo car at Charleston airport?

Yes, if the host offers airport delivery. QUSE Cars delivers to and collects from Charleston International 24 hours a day, with the return spot sent through the Turo app.
