Renting a Car Under 25 in Charleston: What Turo Allows

Turo lets drivers as young as 18 book in the US, but the car you can get depends on your age and the car's class. Here is how it actually works in Charleston, and where to start in our fleet.

If you are under 25, renting a car in Charleston usually starts with a surprise at the counter: an age surcharge, a short list of cars you are allowed to take, or a flat no. Turo works differently, and for a lot of younger drivers it is the easier path. It is not a free pass, though. Turo has its own age rules, and they are tied to the specific car. This guide lays out those rules as Turo publishes them, what the young driver fee means for your total, and which of our cars in Mount Pleasant make the most sense to look at first.

Turo's age rules in the US

Turo sets the minimum age by vehicle class, and it uses your age on the day you book, not the day the trip starts. From Turo's US booking requirements:

Vehicle classMinimum age to book
Standard vehicle18 or older
Vehicle with a total market value over $20,00021 or older
Deluxe Class vehicle25 or older
Super Deluxe, Classic, or Specialty vehicle30 or older

Two details matter here. First, the class is Turo's call, not the host's. We cannot move a car into a lower class so a younger guest can book it. Second, because the rule uses your age at booking, a guest who turns 21 or 25 the week before the trip still has to wait until after the birthday to book the higher tier.

You also need a physical, valid license. Turo does not accept learner's permits, provisional or restricted licenses, photocopies, or an International Driving Permit on its own. A temporary license works if it is valid for the whole trip, with a second photo ID if it has no photo.

The young driver fee

Drivers aged 18 to 24 pay a young driver fee on Turo. Turo calculates it from your age at booking, and it varies with trip length and other factors, so there is no single number to quote. What matters for budgeting is where it shows up: it is part of the checkout total you see before you confirm. It is not added later, and it is not something the host sets or collects. Turo also states it cannot be refunded once the trip is complete, so treat it as part of the price, not a deposit.

The practical move is simple. Pick your dates, open the car you want, and go to checkout. The number on that screen already includes the trip fee, your protection plan, any delivery fee, and the young driver fee. Compare that total, not the daily rate, against whatever a counter quotes you.

How that compares to a rental counter

Most major rental companies also charge drivers under 25 a daily surcharge, and many set a minimum age of 20 or 21 with some car classes restricted until 25. Policies differ by company and by location, and they change, so we won't quote a specific counter's rules. The difference with Turo is mostly transparency: you see whether you are eligible for a specific car, and the full price including the fee, before you book. There is no arriving at the airport and finding out the class you reserved is off-limits.

Which QUSE cars to look at first

We don't control how Turo classes each car, and a car's class can change as its market value changes, so the listing itself is the final word. As a rule of thumb, though, the older and lower-value cars in a fleet are the likeliest to be open to the youngest drivers, and the luxury cars are the likeliest to carry a 25-plus or 30-plus requirement. Here is how our lineup breaks down with that in mind:

CarDaily rateWhy it fits a younger renter
2014 Ford Escape$55/dayOur longest-running workhorse: 97 trips, 4.96 stars. Older, practical, room for beach gear.
2019 Ford Fusion Hybrid$65/day42 MPG, quiet, roomy back seat. 30 trips, 5.0 stars.
2022 Toyota Corolla Hybrid$55/dayAbout 52 MPG, the lowest fuel bill in the fleet. 32 trips, 5.0 stars.
2022 Chevrolet Equinox$55/daySUV space at our lowest rate. 57 trips, 5.0 stars.

Our luxury tier (the Porsche Macan, the two Mercedes, the Volvo XC60 and the BMW X1) and the GMC Sierra Denali are the cars most likely to need an older driver. If you are 25 or over, they book on the same terms as everything else.

Tips that make a younger booking go smoothly

  • Finish your Turo account early. Turo asks for license verification and a protection choice after booking. Everything has to be done at least two hours before the trip starts or the trip is canceled, so don't leave it for the airport.
  • Book once, not one car at a time. Turo only lets a guest hold one trip at a time with no overlapping dates, so pick the car you actually want.
  • Choose protection you understand. The cheapest plan leaves you responsible for the most. For a first Turo trip, a middle plan is usually the calm choice.
  • Message us with questions. We answer through the Turo app. If you are unsure whether a car will work for your age, ask before you book.
  • Return it the way you got it. Same fuel level, on time, reasonably clean. That keeps the total exactly what you saw at checkout and builds the trip history that makes future bookings easier.

Getting from CHS to the car

Younger travelers flying in for a wedding, a college visit, or a beach week often ask about the airport. We deliver to Charleston International Airport for a $100 fee, and delivery is free on trips of 5 days or more. The full walkthrough is in our guide to how Turo airport delivery works at CHS, and the airport page is here.

Frequently asked
